NAN REPORT 2025

Bannockburn Neighbors Assisting Neighbors (NAN) was founded in 2009 by Bannockburn residents Helen Pelikan and Miriam Kelty to help senior Bannockburnians age in place. NAN is a 501c(3) organization and consists solely of volunteers. There is no membership dues to access NAN’s services. The Board currently consists of Anne Quinlan, President, JoAnn Krecke, Vice President, Patty Howie, Treasurer, and Barbara Selter, Marianne Ross, Helene Granof, and John Noble.

A system of Block Coordinators (BC’s) was put in place to interact with elderly neighbors on their block and refer them to NAN as needed for assistance. NAN offers rides to appointments or shopping, social contacts, or minor help around the house. Being a Block Coordinator doesn’t require much time but it’s an important function to alert NAN of any neighbor’s needs. We are still very short of BC’s. NAN is still seeking Block Coordinators for the following streets: Barr Road, the hook of East Halbert, Lower East Halbert, Crathie Lane, Upper Bannockburn Drive, Rannoch Ct., Vorlich Lane, and Orkney Parkway. If you would be willing to be a BC for your street, please contact JoAnn Krecke  (dandjkrecke@verizon.net).

NAN has a Loaner Closet of medical aids such as walkers, crutches, wheelchairs, shower chairs, etc. They can be accessed free of charge on a temporary basis. The Loaner Closet is housed in the Bannockburn Clubhouse. The point of contact for borrowing items is Anne Quinlan (text to 301-908-0662) or JoAnn Krecke (dandjkrecke@verizon.net).

This year NAN has provided rides to our neighbors though the requests still haven’t reached the level they were prior to Covid. If you have time to volunteer as an occasional driver, please let us know. NAN sponsored trips to several movies on Senior Thursdays at the Avalon Theater and also had several lunches at nearby restaurants for folks who are aging solo. There is a NAN Walking Group for anyone in the neighborhood on Wednesday mornings at 8:00. JoAnn Krecke sends out NAN notes every two weeks to residents announcing information on topics of interest and various activities sponsored by others in the area. If you would like to be on the list, email her at dandjkrecke@verizon.net.

NAN has been invited to partner with Little Falls Village (LFV) on shared programming and volunteer activities. LFV has some paid staff which allows them to provide robust programs and services to the community. Many of their speaker series are offered free and are either on Zoom or in person at LIttle Falls library. Other more tailored programs are offered through a community membership, and more detailed services are offered through a full membership.

Free community membership will be offered through March 1, 2026. This will give Bannockburn NAN members a sense of the additional opportunities available through our partnership with Little Falls Village. Some events are space limited such as museum tours or their Aging Well series. This might be a good reason to sign up and learn about what is available. To learn more, visit LittleFallsVillage.org or call the Little Falls Village office at 301-320-3267.
